THE HAWTHORNE SHOOTOUT POLICE REPORT

McNamara's Report:

8-21-71 at 2114 hours Offense: PC 211, 217

On 8-21- 71 at 2114 hours, Officers McInerny/Cox received a radio call of a PC 211, Robbery, alarm at Western Surplus, 13355 S. Hawthorne Blvd. Upon arrival, officers parked Unit 53 just north of the front of the store. Officers exited the unit and observed the store to possibly be closed as the closed sign was on the door and the metal gates were pulled across the front windows and doors.

Officer Cox proceeded to the N/window E/front of store and Officer McInerny went to the S/window E/front of store. Officers could not observe any activity or movement in the store. Lt. Kobus, in Unit 55A, arrived at the scene and Officer McInerny requested him to cover the rear of the store. Officer Cox stated, "I think I saw someone move inside ". Officer Mclnerny turned back to the window and observed a cauc male subject, dark medium length hair raise up over a counter top in the NIW corner (rear) of the store, then duck down again.

Officer McInerny advised Officer Cox to go to the rear of the building and assist Lt. Kobus. Officer McInerny then went to the police unit and via radio requested assistance as this was good alarm (robbery).

As Officer Mclnerny ran back west on 134 St. He observed Unit 55A parked facing N/W blocking the alley and Officer Cox standing S/W 10' from the corner of the building. A single shot was then fired from the rear of the store (possibly shot gun blast) and Officer Cox then began firing the unit's shotgun at a white van-type truck parked backed up to the rear door of Western Surplus. Van facing west.

As Officer McInerny ran past Officer Cox, he observed several flashes and sounds of shots, rapid short burst, coming from the interior, driver's side of the van, believed to be automatic weapon fire.

Officer McInerny heard the shots whizzing to the rear of his person as he ran past Officer Cox, ducking down behind Unit 55A. As Officer McInerny continued running, he observed Lt. Kobus crouched down behind the left front fender of the police unit returning fire from his service revolver. At this time, Officer McInerny observed one flash from the driver's area and heard one shot strike the hood of Unit 55A and glance off passing between Officer McInerny's left arm and left side. Officer McInernv at this time took cover behind a 3' block wall of the residence at 4429 "A" W. 134 St. and fired six shots from his service revolver into the direct front of the van. Driver attempted to drive away at this time. Four rounds struck right center of windshield going into the rear of the driver's seat, two rounds striking top center of van front below windshield, believed to have hit unknown suspect standing between front seats of van as unknown suspect fell backwards on van floor at this time.

Officer McInerny then illuminated the interior of the van with a three cell flashlight, new batteries, and observed a subject slumped forward over the steering wheel. Description: Cauc, poss male/female, short brn (light) hair, baby face, age 16-20 yrs wearing a light multi-colored shirt, blue pants. Officer McInerny observed a male subject 23-25 yrs, dark hair, blue pants and shirt, crouching in the left rear of the van.

Officer Matthews stated, "Everybody get out of the vehicle " and Officer Siegel opened the driver's door of the van and the driver fell out in a prone position next to the van, stating, "I'm hit, I'm hit"

On 8-21-71 responded to the Western Surplus Store at 134 St. and Hawthorne Bl. Upon arrival at said location, Officer McNamara was advised that an attempt PC 211 of the store had just transpired and that 5-6 subjects were involved. Officer further learned that (3) suspect, (2) female and (1) male, had been wounded in an exchange of fire with police. No injury was sustained by any officer.

Upon going to the rear of the location, Officer McNamara observed Unit 55A to be facing in a N/W direction blocking the N/S alleyway. Officer further noted the passenger window of Unit 55A to be splattered and numerous bullet hole on the passenger side of the vehicle. A white van was observed facing in a S/W direction with the rear portion near the rear door of Western Surplus. Upon entering the rear portion of the location, officer observed numerous clothing items to be thrown about and upon checking the gun cabinets along the north wall, observed the rear windows of the show cases to have been broken out and guns stacked in a cardboard box and a metal trash can. Hawthorne Press photographer, Bill Meyer, took numerous pictures of the interior of the location at the direction of Officer McNamara. After pictures were taken of the general area of the gun cabinets, Det. McNamara printed several of the (68) weapons which had been taken from their cabinet and stacked in the above two containers. A third container, a metal trash can, was found on the counter top and it contained (3) weapons. The weapons were printed and several prints found upon certain guns. See evidence list attached A 12 inch bayonet was located near the broken display case with markings upon the blade. Said item held as possible evidence. Several guns and a (unclear word) gun box had a red substance upon them appearing to be dried blood leading officers to believe one of the suspects cut his hand or arm upon the broken and jagged glass.

Item #41 and #52 listed in attached evidence list held as evidence. All other items released to manager of Western Surplus.

Suspect vehicle, a 1966 Ford Van, T-42144, was removed from the location as people were grouping around causing much difficulty to inventory the vehicle at the location of occurrence. At the rear of the police station, Det. Stonebraker removed a canvas bag, a white purse, and a brown jacket. Identification for Catherine Louise Share was found in the white purse.

Upon speaking with various press reporters and LAPD Robbery, it appears Suspect Share may be involved in some type of "hippie " movement as she is believed to be a Charles Manson follower.

Investigation tentatively terminated at 0715 hours. 8-22-71. See PC 211 report.

Signed McNamara, Det. #31

Statements from the report of Lt. Kobus:

During the gunfire, the white van started to move forward, then stopped, then backed up a couple of feet and stopped.

When the gunfire stopped, suspects were ordered out of the vehicle. The first person out was the driver who turned out to be a female wearing a dark jacket. The other person was a male wearing a dark plaid shirt. The female laid down and was bleeding from gunshot wounds. The male bent down over her. I told Officer Schiavl to search the subject and take him into custody. An ambulance was called for the female suspect.

The gunfire started again to the north as part of the suspects fled north and were met by other arriving officers. Three suspects were taken into custody.

Final statement by officer:

Hawthorne Blvd. Upon arrival to the rear, Officers heard shots being fired at officer's from a white van, parked in the alley, to the rear of Western Surplus. At this time officers observed three subjects in the alley, to the rear of vacant lot next door to Western Surplus. A t this time officers Moeder and Gear shouted a command to "halt" to the suspects. Suspects ran to a corner of the building, at this time shouting, "We give up". At this time officers commanded suspects to come out with their hands in the air. Suspects at this time placed their hands in the air and came out of the corner. Officers Moeder and Frankel placed suspects under arrest and were placed in the unit for transportation to the Hawthorne jail for booking. Officer Moeder fired 3 rounds from the shotgun in Unit #57.
