The E! True Hollywood Story

"The Last Days of Sharon Tate"
Broadcast July 25, 1999

The following are quotes from William Garretson.  The quotes are pretty close but may vary slightly due to unintelligible parts (such as Garretson starting to say something and then changing to another thought).

In reference to his leaving the Tate house and hitchhiking down Benedict Canyon to Beverly Hills :

GARRETSON:  I said "You can let me out, right here, 'cause I'm gonna be going straight."  And, uhh, the guy that was... I believe it was the guy that was driving said "If I were you I wouldn't be going back up there... where you came from."  And, uhh, that spooked me.

In reference to hearing Steven Parent being shot:

GARRETSON:  It seemed like firecrackers.  And I thought maybe it was, you know, his car backfiring.  You know I had no idea.  It didn't alarm me... as much, I mean it just seemed...  It made me angry because I thought he was throwing firecrackers out and I thought "If he comes back up here again I'm going to give him hell."  And, you know, 'cause I thought he was going to be waking the people up next door or something.

About trying to make a phone call after Parent left:

GARRETSON:  I went to make a call to find out, uhh, what time it was and, I, ya know, there was no dial tone.

About seeing Krenwinkel chasing Folger:

GARRETSON:  I heard a scream.  And the scream sounded like, you know, like somebody was getting ready to get thrown into the pool.  And, you know, or something.  I looked through the window and it seemed to me that there was a girl chasing a, uhh, girl.  I wonder "What's going on?"  And I didn't look anymore.  You know, I don't wanna look like somebody looking at... you know, looking out the window.

About hearing Folger being stabbed:

GARRETSON: I heard somebody saying, said "Stop. Stop. I'm already dead."  And it didn't make sense.  How can somebody be saying "Stop, you know, I'm already dead"...  How would they be talking if they were dead?  It just doesn't make sense.

About Krenwinkel checking the guesthouse:

GARRETSON:  It seemed like the handle was moved.  Like someone, you know, wanted to come in.  It seemed like a few seconds.  Just a few seconds and all of a sudden I heard, like, someone running in the direction of the main house.  You know, "What's going on?"  And, you know...  No idea.  You know, I just said "Somebody's running away."  You know, why would they be running away?

About the following morning:

GARRETSON:  It was daybreak.  And, you know, the sun was out... And I said, uhh... It just seemed like this was a weird night.  And I remember opening the door... I went and opened the door and let the dogs out.  You know, to do their business.  And then, uhh, I, uhh, came back in.  I never locked the door.  But, but you know, that's uhh, I just... You know, I came back in and then, uhh, went to sleep.

The show had further comments from Garretson about the police arriving, being shown the bodies, and being questioned.  The narrator said Garretson lied to police about the previous night but had no direct quote from Garretson about why he didn't reveal the information quoted above.
