William Goucher

In April of 2004, William Goucher will have a parole hearing.  We'd like to suggest that you write a letter of protest to the parole board.  Letter writing information is available at the bottom of this page.

Lauren and James Willett met during the 1970 Christmas holiday season and were married the following summer.  James was a former seminary student and had served two military tours during the Vietnam War.  While in California, James taught underprivileged children how to read English as a second language.  In the spring of 1972, the couple gave birth to a daughter.

In the autumn of 1972, the young couple suffered an untimely fate.  One night, William Goucher, Michael Monfort and James Craig lied to James Willett and led him to a wooded area.  The trio ordered Willett to dig his own grave and then took turns shooting him.  Shortly after the murder, Goucher and Monfort attempted to rob a liquor store.  When arrested, Monfort used Willett's identification.  After being bailed out, Monfort joined Craig and committed another armed robbery.

It is likely the trio (along with some Manson Family members) deceived Lauren as to her husband's whereabouts.  Lauren was shot in the eye but did not die immediately.  The killers detected a faint heartbeat but chose to bury her in the crawlspace of their house despite the cries of her eight-month old daughter.

On November 8, James' body was discovered.  Police traced his car to a house occupied by the Aryan Brotherhood and Manson Family members.  Police discovered Lauren's body in the crawlspace and the couple's baby in possession of the killers.

It is believed James was murdered to keep him from informing police of the group's illegal activities.  When Lauren learned of her husband's murder, the group silenced her.

Monfort, Craig, Pitman and Cooper pleaded guilty to an array of charges related to the murders of the Willetts.  Also, William Goucher pleaded guilty to murdering James Willett.  He received a sentence of only five years to life.

Craig served his sentence, was released and later murdered.  Cooper served time and was released, too.  Monfort and Pitman were eventually released and married.  He couldn't stay clear of trouble and returned to prison on his third strike and will likely spend his remaining days behind bars.

The remaining culprit in the slaughter is William Goucher.  He is currently in a California prison and has a parole hearing in April 2004.  Goucher originally received a short sentence for the murder but has returned to prison for other illegal activities.  Please consider helping to keep this murderer behind bars by writing a letter.  This is your opportunity to help make a difference and show the parole board that people haven't forgotten what Goucher did.

You must get your letter in ahead of time.  It should include Goucher's name and CDC number.  Keep your letter short and to the point.  A couple of paragraphs should easily get your point across.  Letters are NOT shown to the convict.

The address to write to is:
